Remedy Entertainment has officially launched Control Resonant, a direct sequel to Control (2019), on the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 5. The game introduces a new protagonist, Dylan Faden, and shifts the combat focus from firearms to melee fighting. This move marks a significant shift for a franchise previously known for its combination of supernatural powers and gunplay.
Dylan, the younger brother of Jesse Faden, resurfaces after years of imprisonment at the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). This time, he must navigate a distorted Manhattan ravaged by a paranatural crisis, search for his sister, who serves as FBC Director, and stop chaotic forces such as the Hiss and the Mold. This change of protagonist is one of the most striking aspects of the sequel.
On the mechanical side, Control Resonant introduces the Aberrant, a shapeshifting weapon that can transform into a heavy two-handed hammer or a pair of agile dual blades. Players can also leverage Dylan's supernatural abilities and the surrounding environment in combat. The progression system allows for power upgrades and adaptation to various situations. However, this new approach is not entirely smooth.
The PlayStation LifeStyle review gave it a 7 out of 10. They praised the art design and some story moments, but criticized the repetitive combat and bland open world. This assessment suggests that despite the innovation, the execution still leaves room for improvement.
"After years of imprisonment at the hands of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), Dylan Faden emerges into a distorted Manhattan at the height of a paranatural crisis," reads the game's official description.
Beyond the creative aspects, Control Resonant also marks a strategic partnership between Remedy and Annapurna Pictures, which serves as co-financier and co-producer. This partnership could become a new funding model for independent game studios looking to undertake ambitious projects without relying entirely on major publishers.
For the Indonesian market, the presence of Control Resonant on the PlayStation Store adds to the list of AAA games directly accessible to players in the country. Priced at around Rp900 thousand (exchange rate Rp15,000), the game targets the hardcore gamer segment that owns a PS5. However, its M (Mature) rating and complex psychological themes make it less suitable for all ages. Digital distribution also avoids the logistical hurdles often faced by physical editions in Indonesia.
Going forward, the success of Control Resonant will depend on community reception and post-release updates. Remedy has a track record of fixing games through patches, as it did with the original Control. If player response is positive, the franchise could expand its universe with spin-offs or other media adaptations. The question is whether this melee approach and new protagonist are enough to captivate longtime fans while attracting newcomers.
