After months of internal turmoil, Bungie has finally announced a surprising new direction: Destiny 2 will not be abandoned. Studio heads Poria Torkan and Josh Deane, who now lead the Marathon project, conveyed this through an official video and blog post. They admitted that Destiny 2's latest expansion and Marathon's launch did not meet expectations, both in terms of player reach and community satisfaction.
The decision to revive Destiny 2 marks a reversal of last May's policy, which stated that active development would cease, followed by layoffs in June. Now, Bungie promises to bring back content that was previously put into the "vault"โa controversial practice since 2020 that disappointed many players. "We can't undo decisions that have been made, but we can acknowledge their impact and make amends by restoring important parts of Destiny's history," they wrote in the blog post.
This move is seen as an effort to salvage community trust, which had previously crumbled. Bungie affirmed its new commitment: "building a stronger long-term future for Destiny, while honoring and restoring its past." They promised to provide regular updates on the "unvaulting" process in the coming months.
Meanwhile, Marathon's fate remains uncertain. The development team had previously released a roadmap extending to late 2026, but the latest blog post only states that they will "hold onto what makes Marathon special but evolve it beyond the genre boundaries we imposed." The plan is for Marathon to be expanded into a deeper survival experience, giving players more ways to explore its dangerous alien world. Unfortunately, there are no detailed explanations of what its final form will look like.
"We will hold onto what makes Marathon special, but evolve it beyond the genre boundaries we imposed. We will expand Marathon into a deeper survival experience."
Leadership changes are a key factor behind this maneuver. Justin Truman, who previously served as studio head, stepped down in the summer after a year at the helm. Now, Torkan and Deane must prove they can steer Bungie out of its current troubles. The public eagerly awaits whether these promises will materialize or remain mere rhetoric.
For the global gaming industry, Bungie's move reflects significant pressure from an increasingly vocal community. Other major studios like CD Projekt Red and BioWare have also experienced similar crises and sought to recover by listening to players. In Indonesia, the PC and console game market continues to grow, with Destiny 2 and Marathon having a significant fanbase. Bungie's strategy change could influence local community dynamics, especially if the restored content attracts former players to return.
Moving forward, the most crucial aspect is whether Bungie can deliver on its promises. If it fails, any remaining trust could be completely lost. Conversely, if successful, this could serve as an example of rebuilding the relationship between developers and players. Will Bungie truly restore Destiny's glory, or will it drown in overly high expectations?
