Actress Amanda Seyfried surprised the public with her admission that she turned down a television series project because she was unwilling to take part in sex scenes she felt were excessive. The star of Mamma Mia! revealed this during a panel with Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival, as cited from various sources.
The 40-year-old explained that her stance on intimate scenes has shifted drastically compared with the start of her career. "I turned down a show that required me to do sex scenes constantly. No matter who it was with, I didn't want to do it. I'm not comfortable. I'm not interested right now," she said during the session.
She added that perhaps in the future she might be in a different space, but for now she refuses to have to be naked with strangers. Seyfried did not name the role she turned down, but she acknowledged that she never used to have a problem with such scenes.
"Our job is weird. The older I get, the weirder it feels. We have to be romantic with people who aren't our partners... Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's very uncomfortable. But I can't believe I used to think, 'Let's kiss, great! This is fun.' It used to feel so natural, like there was no problem," she recalled.
This change in attitude, according to Seyfried, is inseparable from her role as a mother. She has two children, Nina (9) and Thomas (6), from her marriage to Thomas Sadoski, from whom she has now separated. Since becoming a mother, she has learned to set boundaries and to say "no" more firmly.
She recounted a simple but meaningful moment while walking with Nina in Manhattan. A fan asked for a photo, and Seyfried politely declined. "I asked Nina, 'How do you feel? Is that okay?' She answered, 'I'm proud of you, Mama.' Then at the coffee shop, the barista also asked for a photo, and I declined. Nina said again, 'I'm proud you said no.' I was stunned. I should be the one saying no, not her," she said.
Seyfried's decision highlights an issue that is increasingly relevant in the global entertainment industry: the line between professionalism and an actor's personal comfort in intimate scenes. The practice of intimacy coordinator has become standard in many Hollywood and European productions, but not all actors feel comfortable. In Indonesia, similar discussions are beginning to emerge, especially in the film and soap opera industries that often feature romantic scenes. Though not yet as strict as in the West, awareness of the importance of consent and personal boundaries is slowly growing.
Seyfried's move could set a precedent for other actors to dare to turn down roles that violate their personal boundaries. At the same time, the industry needs to keep adapting to the needs of its performers, including providing safe spaces and respecting individual decisions. The question is, will more stars follow in Seyfried's footsteps in refusing intimate scenes that do not align with their values or comfort?
