Stjepan Loncar has proven he is more than just a squad filler in Persija Jakarta's midfield. In the first four weeks of the 2026/2027 BRI Super League, the 29-year-old midfielder has recorded two goals and two assists, making him one of the most productive players in the Macan Kemayoran squad.
Loncar's contribution was felt even more when Persija crushed PSIM Yogyakarta 4-0 at Sultan Agung Stadium, Bantul, on Saturday (10/10/2026). The two goals he scored in the second half changed the course of the match and underlined his central role as the team's attacking orchestrator.
Persija coach Shin Tae-yong did not hesitate to offer praise. According to him, Loncar's performance in that match was almost flawless. "In the second half Loncar managed to score two goals and changed the mood of the match. In my view, Loncar played very well and put in a nearly perfect performance," said Shin Tae-yong.
For Loncar, this impressive form is inseparable from the supporters' backing. He called The Jakmania the 12th player who always provides extra energy, both at home and away. "Since I first joined, I have always said the supporters are our 12th player this season. Whether we play at home or away, we cannot do anything without their support," said the former Bosnia national team midfielder.
Loncar's statement is not mere pleasantry. The facts on the ground show that when facing PSIM in Bantul, around 1,000 The Jakmania members were willing to travel a long distance to give their direct support. Their presence is proof that Persija still has a fanatical supporter base capable of driving the team, even in away matches.
Supporter backing combined with the individual quality of the players has produced a perfect start. Persija swept their first four matches with wins over Borneo FC, Persib Bandung, Java United, and PSIM. Rizky Ridho and his teammates have collected eight goals and conceded just once, a record that has taken them to the top of the provisional standings with 12 points.
Consistency at the start of this season is a positive signal for Persija, who failed to compete at the top last season. The arrival of Shin Tae-yong as coach has brought significant changes in tactics and competitive mentality. Loncar is one of the players who has benefited most from the playing system implemented by the South Korean coach.
Even so, the real challenge will only be tested in the coming weeks. Persija will return to away action with a trip to Persita Tangerang's home ground in the fifth week, Saturday (17/10/2026), at Banten International Stadium. This match will be a test of whether Macan Kemayoran's consistency can hold up away from home.
If Loncar and his colleagues can maintain their form, it is not impossible that Persija will become a strong candidate for the title this season. However, the history of Indonesian football often shows that a brilliant start does not always end in a trophy. Can Persija keep the momentum going until the end of the season?
