English singer and songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has announced the release of his fifth album, Fudge, scheduled to arrive on 23 October 2026. The announcement is eagerly awaited by fans and marks a new chapter in the musician's career after he revealed he is working to recover from a stroke he suffered several months ago.
In a statement shared through his official Instagram account, Kiwanuka explained that Fudge was written almost at the same time as the creative process for his fourth album, Small Changes, in 2023. However, the project later grew into an entity of its own—without the luxury of a big studio and far from industry pressure. "This album captures a sense of optimism, joy, and freedom," said the 39-year-old in the written statement.
What makes Fudge even more special is that the album was recorded before Kiwanuka suffered the stroke. His worsening health did not hinder a creative process that was already flowing. According to the statement, Fudge was born from a pure desire to make music, not from commercial demands or outside expectations.
"I'm very happy to be able to announce my new album, Fudge. Especially because over the past few months I've been grappling with health issues that will greatly hinder and disrupt my ability to make music for the foreseeable future," Kiwanuka wrote on Instagram.
He revealed that the stroke he suffered was caused by bleeding in the brain due to high blood pressure. "It's a long journey to recover from a stroke, which is why I missed several shows in the US recently," he added. Kiwanuka also admitted he cannot yet be sure when he will return to the stage, given that the brain injury he suffered was quite severe and still requires a lot of rehabilitation.
Despite facing a difficult time, Kiwanuka expressed his thanks to NHS staff and the medical workers who treated him. He also appreciated the support of his family, friends, and team, who continue to update information about Fudge. "This is certainly one of the hardest challenges I've faced and I'll be happy to be on the other side of it when the time comes," he said.
To celebrate the album's release, a mural depicting the themes of Fudge has been painted on a wall in the Muswell Hill area of London—where Kiwanuka grew up. The mural is a physical marker that the work is closely tied to his roots and life journey.
Indonesian Context: For soul and folk music fans in Indonesia, the album Fudge offers another side of Kiwanuka that is freer and more personal. Amid a global music industry that often demands high productivity, Kiwanuka's story is a reminder that mental and physical health are the foundation for creating work. Indonesian music practitioners who often face similar pressure can take a lesson about the importance of creative space free from intervention.
Going forward, a big question still looms: will Kiwanuka be able to return to the concert stage, or will he choose to focus more on the creative process behind the scenes? What is clear is that Fudge is not just an album—it is a statement of resilience from an artist who refuses to give in to circumstance.
