Blockchain-Based Approaches for Network Security Enhancement: Mechanisms, Applications, and Future Directions

A comprehensive review of blockchain's role in mitigating DDoS attacks, enabling threat intelligence sharing, and securing IoT data, with an analysis of scalability, interoperability, and energy challenges.

The core problem

Traditional network security mechanisms, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and cryptographic schemes, are increasingly inadequate against sophisticated cyberattacks. The rise of decentralized and large-scale environments like the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing has exacerbated issues of data integrity, privacy, and trust management. Blockchain technology offers a new paradigm by providing decentralization, immutability, and cryptographic consensus. This paper reviews recent studies from IEEE, Springer, and Elsevier, along with real-world case studies, to explore blockchain's achievements and future prospects in network security. It first introduces blockchain principles and current security challenges, then investigates applications in DDoS mitigation, threat intelligence sharing, and secure data sharing in IoT, and finally discusses challenges and future research directions.

Innovation

The review reveals that blockchain integration significantly enhances network security in several domains. In DDoS mitigation, blockchain-based solutions enable decentralized attack detection and response, reducing single points of failure. For threat intelligence sharing, blockchain provides a tamper-proof platform for exchanging attack signatures and indicators of compromise among organizations, improving collective defense. In IoT environments, blockchain ensures data integrity and privacy through decentralized identity management and secure data sharing. Experimental case studies demonstrate improvements in transparency, resilience, and trustworthiness. However, challenges such as scalability limitations (e.g., transaction throughput), interoperability issues between heterogeneous blockchain networks, and high energy consumption in consensus mechanisms like Proof of Work persist.

The study is based on an extensive literature review of recent research published in IEEE, Springer, and Elsevier, complemented by experimental case studies of real-world blockchain-based security frameworks. The review systematically analyzes blockchain applications in network security, focusing on three key areas: DDoS mitigation, threat intelligence sharing, and secure data sharing in IoT environments. The methodology includes a comparative analysis of existing solutions, identification of common architectural patterns, and evaluation of performance metrics such as scalability, interoperability, and energy efficiency. The paper also synthesizes findings to propose future research directions.

Why it matters

The findings suggest that while blockchain offers transformative potential for network security, its adoption is hindered by inherent trade-offs. Scalability remains a critical bottleneck; for instance, Bitcoin's throughput of ~7 transactions per second (TPS) is inadequate for large-scale IoT networks. Interoperability requires standardized protocols to enable cross-chain communication. Energy efficiency, particularly in Proof of Work, can be addressed by shifting to Proof of Stake or other consensus algorithms. The paper evaluates potential directions, including lightweight consensus mechanisms for IoT, hybrid architectures combining blockchain with traditional security tools, and regulatory frameworks for decentralized trust. Overall, integrating blockchain into network security infrastructure can significantly improve transparency, resilience, and trustworthiness in digital ecosystems, but requires careful consideration of these challenges.
