Luke Vickery began his international career with the Indonesia national team with an achievement few debutants experience: a championship trophy. The 20-year-old helped Indonesia win the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after beating Thailand 4-2 on penalties (2-2) at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Monday (5/10/2026) night WIB.
For Vickery, that moment became an important turning point in his career. He had officially become an Indonesian citizen (WNI) on 16 July 2026, and this tournament was his first major international event with the Garuda squad. Coach John Herdman immediately showed his trust by starting him as a right winger from the opening match against Singapore on Friday (25/9/2026).
That trust was not wasted. Vickery recorded an assist for Ragnar Oratmangoen's goal in the 15th minute of his debut match. His fine form continued when Indonesia crushed Bangladesh 9-2, in which he also scored. In total, he collected 237 minutes of playing time, one goal, one assist, and most importantly: a winner's medal.
In the final, Vickery played 60 minutes before being replaced by Rizky Ridho. Although he did not score or assist in the title match, he said he gained valuable experience. "It's hard to describe a match like this. There are so many emotions, with momentum constantly going up and down," he said, as quoted from FIFA's official website.
Vickery stressed that the team's success meant far more than personal achievements. "I always want to keep growing. I scored some goals and provided a number of assists in this tournament. But in the end, we managed to win the whole tournament. That's all that matters," he said.
The player, who now plays for Macarthur FC in the Australian league, is aware that competition in the Indonesia national team is getting tighter. Still, he is determined to keep improving so he remains Herdman's first choice in upcoming tournaments. This humble attitude and focus on self-development are a positive signal for the future of Indonesia's attack.
Vickery's success is also inseparable from coach Herdman's courage in giving opportunities to young players. That decision proved capable of refreshing the squad and providing additional options on the flanks. With a championship title in hand, Vickery now has valuable capital to compete at a higher level, both at club level and with the national team.
Going forward, the challenge for Vickery is to maintain consistency and prove that his performances at the ASEAN Cup were not merely a fluke. If he can keep developing, he has the potential to become a mainstay for Indonesia in various international competitions, including the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers. Will Vickery become a long-term star for the Indonesia national team? Time will tell, but the start he has shown is very promising.
