Indonesian football legend Sudirman recalled the historic moment when he took the decisive penalty that gave Indonesia victory over Thailand in the 1991 SEA Games final. The story has resurfaced ahead of the two teams' clash in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup final, set to be held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Monday (5/10/2026) evening WIB. That golden experience 35 years ago is considered relevant because the final could go to a penalty shootout.
In the previous four AFF Cup finals, Indonesia always fell to Thailand. The 1-4 defeat in 2000, elimination via penalties 2-4 in 2002, a 2-3 aggregate loss in 2016, and a 2-6 humiliation in 2020 form a dark record that haunts them. However, history also records one dramatic victory in the 1991 SEA Games final, when Indonesia beat Thailand in a shootout with a 4-3 score.
Sudirman, affectionately known as Jenderal, recounted the tense moments. After the first five takers, the score was still level at 3-3. Coach Danurwindo, then an assistant to Anatoly Polosin, offered the players the chance to be the next executioner. Robby Darwis declined because he did not feel ready. "Because all the players objected, I raised my finger. When Danurwindo asked if I was sure, I said I was very ready and confident," said Sudirman, as quoted by Bola.com.
According to Sudirman, the courage to take responsibility is the differentiator. He believes that in a penalty shootout, technical ability is often overcome by psychological pressure. "The taker must have belief. We must be able to beat ourselves, such as the fear of failure," he stressed. He also advised takers not to change the direction of the kick they usually practice. "If there is an intention to change direction, it means there is doubt. I used to strike the ball hard. Even if the keeper could anticipate it, he would definitely be beaten for pace," he added.
Sudirman's story reflects that a winning mentality can be built from bitter and sweet experiences. The current Indonesia national team features players like Kevin Diks, who has plenty of playing time in Europe. However, the pressure of a final in front of tens of thousands of their own supporters remains a test in itself. The coach and the team's psychologist staff need to ensure the players are mentally ready if the match must be decided from the spot.
"If you look at the current strength of Indonesia and Thailand, a penalty shootout is possible. If it reaches that stage, mental factors and luck will determine the winner." โ Sudirman
The big question is whether the Garuda squad can end the Thailand curse in the final. The history of 1991 proves that Indonesia can win in the most critical moments. Now, with full support from the fans and thorough preparation, that opportunity is open again. If a penalty shootout occurs, names like Kevin Diks or other senior players must take on the role of executioner with the same confidence as Sudirman three decades ago.
