The future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! is back in the spotlight after Disney President and COO Dana Walden spoke about the challenges facing the late-night talk show. The contract for the show, which has aired since 2003, expires in May 2027, and Disney is weighing its next move.
In an interview with Bloomberg's Screentime, Walden called late night a "very challenging daypart." She acknowledged that while Kimmel's ratings have risen, the increase comes amid a shrinking broadcast television audience. "That doesn't mean Jimmy isn't doing a phenomenal job, and his ratings are up, but they're up relative to a smaller audience watching late night on broadcast television," she said.
Walden also highlighted the success of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! YouTube channel, which draws millions of on-demand viewers. But she stressed that the model is not necessarily profitable for a premium talk show. "That's not a profitable opportunity for a very premium talk show, so we're trying to figure out the business while respecting the deep partnership," she added. Walden affirmed her good relationship with Kimmel, but emphasized the need to find a solution that works for both sides.
This uncertainty is nothing new. Last September, the show was briefly pulled after Kimmel's comments about the death of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Though it returned to air a few days later, the incident and the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's The Late Show left Kimmel feeling "a little defeated" about the future of the late-night format. In an interview with Vulture in June, Kimmel said, "In a lot of ways, I feel like I'm looking at my own future. There are far more people watching late-night TV than before, if you look at the number of views my colleagues and I get online every day and add our linear TV ratings. We're not just dying of natural causes. We're being poisoned."
Disney, through ABC, has also dismissed reports that the show will end in May 2027. An ABC spokesperson said, "This information is inaccurate. Any reports about the future of the show at this time are purely speculative." But Walden's remarks indicate that internal discussions are indeed underway.
"I love Jimmy. We have a great friendship. He's close to a number of people at Disney, and again, we're trying to work it out and understand both. What does Jimmy want? What's the right thing to do, and what's the right thing for our business?" - Dana Walden
On the other side, Kimmel himself once shared a lighthearted story about his daughter, Jane (12), who was upset when the show went on hiatus. On the Armchair Expert podcast, Jane was said to have cried because she thought the show would disappear. Kimmel joked that the reaction was "annoying and presumptuous," but he revealed that Jane is determined to take over the family show one day.
For Indonesia's entertainment industry, this dynamic reflects how the traditional television business model is facing digital pressure. National TV stations have also begun shifting focus to streaming platforms and social media to reach younger audiences. Disney's decision on Jimmy Kimmel Live! could be an indicator of where the global talk show industry is headed, one that may increasingly rely on digital distribution and different monetization.
With more than two years left on the contract, Disney has time to formulate a strategy. Will it keep the traditional format with adjustments, or turn it into fully digital content? The answer will determine not only Kimmel's fate, but also the future of the late-night genre in an era of audience fragmentation.
