Meta Releases Ray-Ban Gen 3: Higher Price, Modest Improvements, Worth the Upgrade?

Meta officially introduced the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 at Meta Connect 2026, bringing a set of updates that are largely incremental. The device remains the company's flagship in the smart glasses segment, though it is no longer the only new product since Meta also launched a camera-free model for the first time. The starting price of $449, or around Rp7.2 million (assuming an exchange rate of Rp16,000), makes it $70 more expensive than the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2.
The most striking improvement is in battery life. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 is claimed to last up to 9 hours on a single charge, one hour longer than the Gen 2, and up to 50 hours with the charging case, two hours longer than the previous generation's 48 hours. Even so, the difference is slim compared with the Ray-Ban Meta Audio, which promises 12 hours of use. For everyday users, a one-hour difference may not be very noticeable, but it is still a plus for those who often spend time outdoors without access to charging.
On the audio side, Meta added an extra microphone, bringing the total to six. The company claims the redesigned microphone layout can better suppress background noise during calls or interactions with AI. This feature also opens support for Dolby Atmos spatial audio, both for listening and recording, which is planned to be available only in late 2026. However, the effectiveness of this improvement still needs to be tested directly to determine whether the difference is significant compared with the Gen 2.
Meta also brought the action button previously introduced on the Ray-Ban Meta Optics and Meta Glasses to the Gen 3. This button can be used to summon Meta AI, take pictures, or serve as a shortcut for various other features. Meanwhile, the Gen 2 only has a capture button limited to camera features. This change gives users more flexibility in accessing features without having to pull out their phone.
In terms of design, the Gen 3 offers two new frame styles: Aviator with classic lenses and thick frames in various transparent and tortoiseshell colors, and Zena with a slimmer cat-eye shape. Only the Wayfarer frame is retained from the Gen 2. In terms of dimensions, the Gen 3 is slightly smaller with a hinge width of 129 mm (Gen 2: 131 mm) and temples of 149 mm (Gen 2: 150 mm), though its weight has increased slightly to 51.5 grams. This change may not be very noticeable unless compared directly, but it shows Meta's direction toward more compact glasses.
Notably, most of the software features announced alongside the Gen 3 will also be available for the Gen 2 through an update. This includes the FDA-approved hearing enhancement feature, interaction with the AI agent Muse, and a dynamic photo capture feature that allows taking multiple photos at once to choose the best framing. This means Gen 2 users are not entirely left behind in terms of functionality.
"The improvements in the Gen 3 rely more on software than a hardware overhaul," Engadget wrote in its review, underlining that the significant updates actually come from the software side.
For consumers in Indonesia, the arrival of the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 offers access to Meta's growing ecosystem, but with a higher price and features that can mostly also be enjoyed on the Gen 2, the decision to upgrade is not easy. The smart glasses market in Indonesia itself is still relatively niche, with penetration limited to the upper segment. Factors such as official availability, after-sales service, and compatibility with local regulations are additional considerations. If you do not need prescription lenses, buying a used Gen 2 could be a more economical alternative.
Going forward, Meta appears set to continue driving innovation through software updates and its AI ecosystem. The question is whether consumers are willing to pay a higher premium for marginal improvements, or would rather wait for the next generation that offers a more significant technological leap. Time will tell, but for now, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 is better positioned as a refinement than a revolution.
