DC's Robin Film 'Dynamic Duo' Pushed to September 2028, Steve Buscemi to Chris Pine in Voice Cast Mix

Warner Bros. officially announced the delay of the animated film Dynamic Duo, which focuses on the character Robin. The release date, originally set for June 30, 2028, has been moved to September 22, 2028. Despite the delay, the gap is relatively short, only about three months, so it should not disrupt fan expectations too much.

The decision was not made without reason. According to a Deadline report, Warner Bros. wants to position Dynamic Duo as back-to-school season viewing aimed at teenagers and college students. In addition, Paramount—currently in the process of merging with Warner Bros.—is scheduled to release the Call of Duty film on June 30, 2028, while September 22 remains clear of major release plans. The delay also affects the next Gremlins film, which has been pushed from 2027 to 2028.

The good news is that Warner Bros. has announced the main voice cast. The InSneider reports that Mason Thames, known for How to Train Your Dragon, will voice Dick Grayson. Logan Kim (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) plays Jason Todd, and Marsai Martin (G20) voices Barbara Gordon. Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, Guardians of the Galaxy) is set as Red Hood 1, while Steve Buscemi (Fargo, Reservoir Dogs) voices Red Hood 2. The InSneider also claims Chris Pine has been offered the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

James Gunn, the architect of the new DC Universe, has stated that Dynamic Duo is not part of the canon he is building. The film will most likely be categorized as an Elseworlds story, standing on its own outside the main continuity.

Batman's status in the DCU remains a big question mark. There are no plans to integrate Robert Pattinson's version into Gunn's universe. Gunn plans to introduce his version of Batman through The Brave and the Bold, but that project has no solid information yet. Dynamic Duo will tell the origin story of Dick Grayson, the first Robin, and Jason Todd, the second character to take up the mantle. The film is directed by Arthur Mintz with a script by Matthew Aldrich (Coco, Lightyear). Instead of traditional animation, the film will use a combination of miniatures, puppets, animatronics, models, and CGI.

For Indonesian audiences, this delay may feel distant, but it remains relevant. DC films have always been one of the pillars of national cinema revenue, especially for the adult animation genre that is rarely produced locally. The presence of names like Steve Buscemi and Chris Pine could draw the interest of Indonesian urban audiences familiar with their work. In addition, the "back-to-school" strategy applied by Warner Bros. could serve as a reference for local distributors in arranging their release calendars, especially when the school holiday season arrives. The Warner Bros.-Paramount merger is also worth watching because it could affect distribution rights negotiations and release schedules in Indonesia.

With the new schedule still two years away, the question is: will Dynamic Duo be able to captivate the increasingly competitive global animation market, or will it sink among other major releases?
